I inquarted some karat gold and ended up with 356 grams of 6k gold.

I dissolved base metals in 1100 ml 35% nitric acid for over an hour.

Then I re-treated with 200 ml 70% nitric.

After this second treatment the acid was full of base metals that were missed on the first try.

Then I re-treated a third time with 150 ml 70% nitric acid.

This time the acid was nearly clear.

I then washed, and dissolved the gold in AR.

Added 25 drops of sulfuric acid to get the lead out.

Neutralized with urea and filtered (very little in the filter).

I dropped the gold

Then washed and rinsed in boiling water about 5 times.

Then boiled in ammonium hydroxide - washed and rinsed.

Then boiled in HCl - washed and rinsed.

I dried the powder and melted in a dish.

This really helped: I used a second stationary torch to heat the graphite mold while using a seperate torch to melt the gold.

This new (to me) technique produced a spectacular 2.765 troy ounce bar of fine gold - WOW!

Thanks for looking

Boy that's a nice Bar you got their

I really like seeing your posts Kadriver, their well presented with thought out processes and great rich photos to boot!

Looks like you may have lost approx 3g during the process? At 6k to start with.

Regards

Beautiful work! Bravo!

That charming ingot in your hand makes your wedding band look awfully pale.

I had the following karat gold to start with:

18k - 50.2 grams = 37.65 grams pure gold
14k - 63.1 grams = 36.91 grams pure gold
10k - 30.1 grams = 12.55 grams pure gold

I calculated I needed about 205 grams of silver to get the karat gold I had down to 6k. I actually added a little over 213 grams of silver for the inquartation.

Total amount of fine gold expected = 87.1
Actual refined gold yield = 86.0 grams.

Then I found 2.2 grams of 10k that I over looked. I added 3 grams of silver to this and added it to the rest of the batch.

I actually lost only 1.1 to 2 grams of gold during the process.

After dropping the gold, I filtered the muddy liquid, but did not let any of the heavy gold at the bottom of the container get into the filter.

The mud accumulated on the filter and was thick enough to scrap some off. I did not try to recover this gold mud and add it to this bar because there were other contaminants on that filter paper along with the gold mud.

I did save the paper and added it to my gold papaer bag for future recovery.

I added an extra 8 grams of silver, more than necessary, to inquart the gold. As a result, the inquarted gold was actually lower than 6k.

i am quoting some of these numbers from memory as I do not have my log in front of me. I hope all these figures make sense and come out correctly.

Thanks for all the kind words - I am having one of best times of my life in this new hobby!

Note the absence of frost on the surface, as well as the lack of any color aside from gold. Quality appears to be excellent.
Very well done.
